About the Bioweapons and Biodefense Freedom of Information Fund (FOI Fund)
The Bioweapons and Biodefense Freedom of Information Fund uses open records law to document and to promote transparency in research on biological (and biochemical) weapons. The Fund files requests under the US Freedom of Information Act and other transparency laws, distributing the annotated results to civil society organizations, academic researchers, and the general public. The Fund is a source of primary documentation on biodefense and related government programs. The Fund's work supports research and advocacy efforts for biological weapons control.
The FOI Fund is an initiative of the Sunshine Project, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that serves as the Fund's fiscal sponsor. Contributions are tax-deductible and exclusively used in FOI Fund requests under the Freedom of Information Act and other open records laws. The FOI Fund is overseen by a Management Committee composed of representatives from advocacy organizations and experts in biological weapons and open records law. The Management Committee reviews and approves the Fund's casework and budget.
The FOI Fund supports open records efforts of the Sunshine Project and other NGOs, community organizations, and academic researchers. Research results are placed on the FOI Fund's website.
